Ya, menjadi ompong kini adalah tren fashion di kalangan generasi muda di Afrika Selatan, terutama di kota cape Town. Kedengarannya aneh, kalau anak-anak muda itu justru mengharapkan menjadi ompong tidak memiliki gigi depan. Apalagi jika gigi mereka masih sehat dan kuat. Apa yang membuat mereka justru ingin tampak seperti kakek-kakek yang tidak punya gigi ?
Tren yang disebut “Smile Cape Flats” berasal dari lingkungan yang padat penduduknya dimana didaerah tersebut anak mudanya biasa memodifikasi tubuhnya menjadi aneh. Menurut Friendling Jacqui dari University of Cape Town’s human biology mengatakan tren ini menjadi fashion karena tekanan teman sebaya sehingga mereka mencabut gigi depannya, kemudian alasan medis dan alasan gangster. Walaupun sebenarnya bergigi ompong sudah diterapkan oleh kalangan nelayan Afrika Selatan agar bisa berkomunikasi satu sama lain di kapal dengan bersiul. Dengan tidak ada halangan gigi depan, bersiul makin mudah dilakukan. Sekarang tradisi menjadi tren bahkan berkembang untuk menarik wanita.
Namun menjadi ompong juga kadang menciptakan kesenjangan ketika bersosialisasi. Untuk itu mereka selain mencabut gigi depan, juga membuat gigi palsu yang bisa dikenakan dikala kerja. Tak Cuma laki-laki yang ingin mencabut giginya, bahwan kaum wanitanya juga demikian. Mereka datang ke dokter gigi meminta mencabut gigi sehatnya dan sekaligus membuat gigi palsu. Menurut Rob Barry dari fakultas kedokteran gigi di University of Western Cape, frekuensi pencabutan gigi telah meningkat meskipun dokter gigi berlatih secara etis dilarang menghapus gigi yang sehat. Untuk gigi palsu kadang mereka mengkreasikan dengan menambahkan emas, berlian atau platina untuk menaikkan status sosialnya. Tapi kasus pencurian gigi palsu melalui perkelahian juga meningkat.
